Our approach to care: THE ACT FRAMEWORK

Patient-Centered. Purpose-Driven. Performance-Ready.

Your Brain Is Always Making a Bet. ACT Trains It to Win.

Every time you move, your brain is making predictions, processing sensory information, and adjusting your body's response. This happens when you hit a tennis serve, walk down stairs, recover from an injury, or simply get through your day.

At BrainSpine Chiropractic, we look beyond the movement itself to understand how the nervous system helps coordinate it. Our approach combines chiropractic care with individualized assessments of movement, balance, coordination, and relevant neurological function.

We call our framework ACT: Athletic/Active Cognitive Training, built around three pillars: Predict. Adapt. Perform. These principles guide how we assess each patient, understand their needs, and develop an individualized care plan.

What Is ACT?

ACT stands for Athletic/Active Cognitive Training. It is a framework developed by Dr. Walker to guide our brain-based approach to movement, function, recovery, and performance.

Despite the word athletic, ACT is not just for competitive athletes. The brain and body work together in every aspect of life. Whether you play sports, exercise regularly, manage recurring pain, or experience dizziness or balance difficulties, understanding how your nervous system functions can help guide an individualized approach to care.

We consider how information from the eyes, inner ear, joints, and other sensory systems contributes to movement and coordination. We then use relevant examination findings, your symptoms, and your goals to help determine which approaches may be appropriate for you.

The goal is simple: understand the person, assess what matters, and build a care plan around their individual needs.

The Three Pillars

Predict. Your brain builds a picture of what is coming next. When that picture is accurate, movement feels smooth and easy.

Adapt. When the brain gets something wrong, it updates the picture. A healthy system learns from every rep. A struggling system patches the problem with workarounds, and workarounds stack up.

Perform. When the picture is accurate enough, your brain runs ahead of the demand instead of chasing it. You get better as the game goes on instead of falling apart.

How ACT Is Different

Traditional chiropractic care, rehabilitation, and exercise programs can serve important roles in improving pain, mobility, and function. At BrainSpine Chiropractic, we also consider how relevant aspects of nervous system function may relate to your concerns and goals.

Our approach may incorporate:

  • Individualized neurological and movement assessments based on your presentation.
  • Eye movement, balance, coordination, and proprioceptive testing when clinically appropriate.
  • Chiropractic care and targeted rehabilitation exercises selected according to your needs.
  • Progress monitoring and plan adjustments based on your response and goals.

Rather than assuming every patient needs the same treatment, we use examination findings to help guide our recommendations.

Our focus is on understanding your concerns, identifying relevant findings, and developing a plan that supports your goals for movement, function, and activity.

Who Can Benefit From the ACT Approach?

ACT is designed to help guide individualized care for people with different needs and goals.

Athletes and Sports Performance

For athletes who want to improve movement efficiency, coordination, balance, and sport-specific performance, where appropriate.

Active Adults and Weekend Warriors

For people who want to stay active, return to exercise, improve movement, or work toward their recreational and fitness goals.

People Experiencing Pain or Neurological Concerns

For individuals seeking evaluation and care for concerns such as recurring pain, headaches, dizziness, balance difficulties, or concussion-related symptoms. The appropriate assessment and care plan depend on the individual and their clinical presentation.

At BrainSpine Chiropractic, we tailor our approach to the person—not just the diagnosis, activity, or symptom.

Common Questions

Do I have to be an athlete?

No. You are the athlete of your own life. ACT is for competitive athletes, and it is also for people with recurring pain, balance concerns, or anyone who wants to move better and recover faster.

Why test my balance if I am not dizzy?

A system can look fine at rest and still compensate under load or fatigue. Balance testing shows how your brain predicts and corrects movement, and the results guide your care plan.

How can eye movements help with my pain?

Your eyes, inner ear, and joints feed information to your brain, and your brain uses it to decide how much protection to put around a body part. When that input is noisy, the brain can guard, tighten, or amplify pain. Testing those systems is one way we look for the root cause instead of only working on the sore spot.

How is this different from other chiropractors or physical therapists?

Most approaches focus on what the body can do. We focus on the system that runs the body, and we build your plan around what we find.

How long until I notice something?

It depends on where the gaps are and how long they have been there. Many people notice something within the first few weeks. Lasting change takes longer, because we are building something permanent instead of masking symptoms.

What Happens at Your First Visit?

Your first visit is a comprehensive head-to-toe neurological and chiropractic exam. It follows the same three steps as our framework.

Predict: We see how each system is doing at rest.

Adapt: We see whether your brain can update when we introduce something new, and which systems respond best.

Perform: We see how your systems hold up under demand.

Then we do a Review of Findings, so you leave knowing exactly what we found and what the plan is. You are not just getting an adjustment. You are getting a roadmap.
